Bridge connecting Sindh, Balochistan swept away

Three people died and seven others were injured in the rain and flood-related incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the last three days said a press release issued here by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Monday.

It said that 221 houses were partially damaged while 102 were completely destroyed in the province.

According to a spokesman for the PDMA, relief goods were distributed to rain victims in Bajaur, Khyber, Kurram, DI Khan and Kohistan Upper.

Announcements were also made through loudspeakers of local mosques, urging people to stay home.

Similarly, district administration, revenue staff, irrigation department and teams of Rescue 1122 were put on alert in DI Khan. A flood relief centre was also established for rain/flood victims at the Government Higher Secondary School, Ramak.

In Lower Chitral, the National Highway Authority (NHA) opened all roads after hectic efforts of 14 hours.

Separately, four members of a family died when the roof of their house caved in Khairpur, Sindh, on late Monday night during rainfall.

According to reports, 11 people have died in Karachi in different rain-related incidents.

In another such incident, three people, including a woman, died in a roof collapse incident in Aranji tehsil of Khuzdar district.

The district administration and area people retrieved the bodies from the debris.

The local administration is looking into the matter.

Moreover, the main bridge on the Karachi-Quetta highway linking Sindh and Balochistan was swept away on Monday.

According to reports, hundreds of vehicles were stranded in the Othal area of the Lasbela district after the bridge collapsed.

The district administration, soon after the incident was reported, reached the site and launched relief activities. However, continuous downpours and flow of water interrupted the relief and rescue operation, which was jointly carried out by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) district administration and armed forces.

In view of the recent collapse of bridges and ongoing heavy rain, the provincial government issued a travel advisory asking people to avoid travelling on Quetta-Karachi and Quetta-Sibi highways.

Meanwhile, the Balochistan government’s Spokesperson Farah Azeem Shah Monday said about 102 people had so far lost their lives due to torrential rains and flash floods in the province.

The dead included 39 men, 30 women and 33 children.

The spokesperson said the rains had damaged 580 kilometres of roads, 11 bridges and five dams.

The spokesperson added the provincial government was continuing relief operations in the rain-affected districts by utilizing all available resources.

Farah Azeem Shah said under the instructions of Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, the provincial government released an amount of Rs 92.4 million rupees for relief and rehabilitation purposes.

She said that the provision of immediate relief to the affected people was the government’s top priority. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority, district administrations and other departments were carrying out the relief and rescue operation in the rain-hit areas.
