5.3 Earthquake jolts Afghanistan: Eight dead with more casualties expected

Tremors felt in Islamabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Abbottabad and adjacent areas with no loss reported

An earthquake jolted Afghanistan, killing at least eight people amid fears of a rise in the death toll while the tremors were also felt in Pakistan.

According to US geological Survey, the earthquake’s intensity was 5.3 on the Richter Scale near the city of Jalalabad. The quake was felt in the Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman provinces along with the capital Kabul.

The tremors of earthquake were also felt in various parts of Pakistan including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Abbottabad, Swabi, Mohmand, Bajaur, Buner and adjacent areas. However, no loss of life was reported in the country.

According to Afghan Disaster Management Deputy Minister Sharafuddin Muslim, they were collecting the information to access the situation.

The spokesman for the provincial governor, Mawlavi Najibullah Hanif, has told media that the earthquake has caused financial and human losses in Kunar.

According to Disaster Ministry Spokesman Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, the initial reports have put the toll due to the quake at six whereas nine have been injured.

An earthquake was also felt in Balochistan’s Kalat area during the last week but there was no reported loss of life or any damage due to the quake.
