Five million fish seeds released into Keenjhar Lake

Sindh Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Abdul Bari Khan Pitafi on Monday inaugurated a fish hatchery at Keenjhar Lake.

Speaking on the occasion, he said the fish hatchery was aimed at the quality growth of fish species in Keenjhar and that strict action would be taken against those involved in the killing of these species.

Highlighting the initiative of the provincial government for the amelioration of Keenjhar Lake – which has also been declared a Ramsar site – he said, “We would release five million fish seeds in Keenjhar Lake every year that would further enhance the capacity of the lake that has remained a mainstay of livelihood for local fisherfolk.” He added that the betterment of Keenjhar would guarantee a healthier ecosystem.

Answering a query, the provincial minister said that the process of vaccinating the livestock across Sindh was underway to control the lumpy skin disease that had rendered huge losses to scores of cattle breeders across the province. Towards the end of the event, the provincial minister – who was accompanying director of hatcheries Zulfikar Ali Larak, DG Marine Sindh Dr Ali Mohammad Mastoi Thatta Fisheries Deputy Director Dr. Ghulam Mustafa Memon and others – released five million fish seeds into the Keenjhar Lake and set on fire a thin net responsible for the mass killing of fish species.
