Several refugees, activists and journalists have alleged that foreign nationals who had been residing in Ukraine are being turned back as they attempted to cross the border into the European Union states in order to escape the fighting with Russia.

Multiple people took to Twitter to state that refugees escaping the war between Russia and Ukraine were not being allowed to enter while Ukrainian nationals were being provided refuge. A professor, Gérard L. F. Chouin, claimed that African students who had been residing in Ukraine were banned from crossing the border into Poland. He called on the European countries to allow these scholars to enter and to “stop the nonsense”.

International television host Sana Saeed shared a clip from a television show in which the guest could be seen enraged that European cities were being attacked, and that things had regressed to the levels seen in countries like Iraq or Afghanistan.

Journalist Emran Feroz said that he had received word from Afghan refugees that they were skeptical that they would be welcomed like Ukrainian refugees.

American writer and civil rights activist Shaun King shared an Instagram on his account in which he said that European authorities were discriminating against immigrants of color in general. He added that those refugees of color who managed to cross into EU states had reported being treated differently than Ukrainian refugees.
