Ahead of summer

Pakistan, like many other countries in the region, is facing the brunt of climate change. Unusual heatwaves, rainfall, and floods have become a recurring issue, leaving hundreds of thousands of people vulnerable to various diseases. Last year, despite repeated appeals by the government, affected individuals did not receive the desired international assistance, leaving them homeless and vulnerable. Unfortunately, the Meteorological Department has predicted severe heatwaves, rainfall, and floods for this year as well.

The Health Department of Sindh has already issued warnings that children may become susceptible to diarrhea, skin diseases, infections, and hepatitis A and E due to recent waves of heat. To prevent this, they suggest boiling water, avoiding the sun, washing fruit before eating, avoiding eating outside, wearing thin clothing, and avoiding wrapping young children in warm clothes. While these are timely precautions, health is not limited to one province; it is a matter of the entire country.

It is the responsibility of provincial governments and relevant departments to ensure the health and well-being of the public. However, they cannot do this alone. The international community must provide the necessary assistance to countries facing the brunt of climate change. It is not just a matter of humanitarianism but also a matter of global security. Climate change has the potential to displace millions of people, leading to economic instability and social unrest. Therefore, it is in everyone’s interest to mitigate the effects of climate change and provide support to affected regions.

It is essential to recognize that climate change is not just an environmental issue but also a human rights issue. The most vulnerable communities are the ones most affected by climate change, and they are the least equipped to deal with its consequences. These communities rely on international aid to survive, and their plight cannot be ignored. Governments must take immediate action to address climate change by reducing emissions, implementing sustainable practices, and investing in green energy.

Pakistan and other countries facing the brunt of climate change require international assistance to mitigate the effects of climate change. It is the responsibility of governments and relevant departments to ensure the health and well-being of the public, but they cannot do this alone. The international community must provide the necessary support to vulnerable communities, recognize climate change as a human rights issue, and take immediate action to address its root causes. Failure to do so could have catastrophic consequences for humanity.
