An inclusive society

Every year, the eve of Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world with traditional zeal. Here in Pakistan, the members of minority community also steal some moments of joy by organizing family get-togethers. However, this year’s limelight was the organization of a sports gala for the minority community by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Culture and Tourism Authority in Peshawar. Music, games and a lot of recreational activities were part of the event, which was attended by the members of the Christian community from Khyber, Mohmand, Peshawar, Nowshera and Mardan districts of KP, as well as people from different walks of life. The event was held to pay homage to the victims of 2013 attack on All Saints Church. Amid reports of violence, discrimination and brutal attacks on people belonging to religions other than Islam, such celebrations give hope of an inclusive society based on respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms, cultural and religious diversity and social justice.

A liberal and progressive Pakistan, where freedom of conscience is an important right of all the people, is the need of hour. Undoubtedly, the Christian community is an equal partner in the struggle for ensuring sustained development, stability, security and solidarity of the country. Socio-economic and political exclusion of non-Muslims must come to an end now, and they must be included in the mainstream dynamic of Pakistan, an ideology that was laid down by none other than Mohammad Ali Jinnah. It is the responsibility of the state to ensure equal rights of all citizens. Religious discrimination in Pakistan is a serious issue. Christians, Hindus and Ahmadis among other religious groups are routinely discriminated against. They are at times refused jobs, loans, housing and other similar things simply because of their choice of religious faith. Pakistan was envisaged to be a safe country for everyone including the non-Muslims where everyone could enjoy equal rights without any discrimination. On this Christmas, let us pledge to promote love for all and hate for none. Let’s start respecting minorities and providing them space to breathe freely.
