Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar

Owning a home is a dream that feels impossible for many low income families in Pakistan. Rent keeps rising, prices of building materials keep climbing, and saving enough money to build even a small house can take a lifetime. This is why the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar programme launched by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif deserves real praise. It is turning that impossible dream into reality for thousands of families across the province.

The numbers tell a powerful story. More than 166,000 interest free loans have been given out so far, and over Rs215.76 billion has already been released for housing construction. Because of this support, 105,594 homes have been fully completed, giving families a permanent place to call their own. Another 28,453 homes are currently being built, and work on 32,048 more houses is expected to start soon. The scale of this effort shows just how serious the government is about solving the housing crisis facing ordinary Punjabis.

What makes this programme even more encouraging is how many people it has reached. Over 1.2 million applications have been submitted, showing just how badly this kind of support was needed. The scheme has helped 91,434 men and 14,007 women build their own homes, and it has also supported 23 transgender beneficiaries, a sign that the programme is trying to reach every corner of society.
