APS survivor awarded honorary doctorate

Ahmad Nawaz, a survivor of the Army Public School (APS) massacre of 2014, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Coventry University, UK.

“Immensely honoured to be awarded an honorary doctorate by Coventry University. Feels surreal at this age to have been awarded such a prestigious honour! Yet another victory against extremism,” tweeted Ahmad Nawaz on Wednesday.

Ahmad Nawaz, 21, is currently studying at the prestigious Oxford University where he was elected president of the university’s student union, Oxford Union, this month. He lives in Birmingham with his family. Nawaz had lost his younger brother Haris in the APS attack while he was critically injured. He has attracted praise and admiration from around the world for his determination.

Nawaz is a human rights activist working to empower youth and ensure quality education for everyone through his Ahmad Nawaz Foundation. Being a victim of terrorism himself, he has been visiting educational institutes across the UK to share his experience as a tool to educate young people about the shocking reality of terrorism and deter them from being radicalised.

He said that the young generation listened to and spoke to him, and he believed the strength of society laid in the education of the younger generation.
