Battlefield against Gen Faiz

To hold a former army officer responsible for actions they may have taken while serving would be absurd. Now that Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has announced that the previous head of the ISI, along with his brother, is being probed for corruption, retired Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed’s name is being linked to investigations. Gen. Hameed is accused of amassing riches beyond his means, even though there have been persistent rumors about him for some time. As the minister failed to identify any organization that is looking into Mr. Hameed’s situation, his statement lacked substance. Maryam Nawaz, the head of the PML-N. and Nawaz Sharif has both asked for the court martial of the retired general over his alleged part in toppling their father’s administration and implicating them both in NAB proceedings. Let’s examine the event’s timing. After Mr. Sharif was overthrown, Gen. Hameed was in an insignificant position.

For the last ten years, the Pakistani army has had a tremendous impact on the politics of the nation. One of the significant occasions was Operation Zarb-e-Azb. The Pakistani military started a significant attack against terrorists in North Waziristan in June 2014. The military’s action to exert its dominance and control over the nation’s security situation was recognized as a crucial one. The military has been actively involved in the fight against terrorism in Pakistan, including ongoing operations against the Pakistani Taliban and other extremist groups. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a major infrastructure project that involves the construction of roads, and ports. and other infrastructure in Pakistan with the help of Chinese investment. The military has been involved in providing security for the project, and some analysts believe that the military has also played a role in influencing the direction of the project. The military has been accused of meddling in Pakistan’s politics, including influencing the outcome of elections and supporting certain political parties. Some analysts believe that the military played a significant role in the ousting of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 2017.

ln response to Ms. Nawaz’s demand that Gen. Hameed is court-martialed, Mr. Sanaullah stated on Wednesday that the decision rests with the army leadership. At this stage, when the army has announced it will remain neutral in politics, the demand for Gen Faiz’s accountability will open Pandora’s box. Yet, the military should think about holding Gen Hameed liable for his crimes if it wants to take advantage of the opportunity to show that it is truly separating itself from political engineering. Throughout the past ten years, the Pakistani military has significantly influenced the nation’s politics, both by its direct participation in security operations and through perceptions of its effect on political events.
