Biden assures support to newly appointed UK PM Rishi Sunak

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday called British newly appointed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and reaffirmed the special relationship between the two states by stating, “The UK remains America’s closest ally.”

According to the Deutsche Welle report, the two leaders talked about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and measures to tackle China’s challenges.

A White House report said that while discussing Ukraine, both Biden and Sunak agreed on the importance of working together to aid Ukraine and hold Russia accountable for its aggression.

The two leaders also discussed Northern Ireland and their support for the Good Friday Agreement (an agreement on how Northern Ireland should be ruled reached between the British and Irish governments, as well as the majority of Northern Ireland’s political parties).

US President Biden also expressed his good wishes on the appointment of Rishi Sunak through Twitter, “Congratulations to Rishi Sunak on becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Together, I look forward to enhancing our cooperation on issues critical to global security and prosperity, including continuing our strong support for Ukraine.”

The 42-year-old Rishi Sunak was officially appointed as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after meeting King Charles at Buckingham Palace after his forerunner Liz Truss’s 49-day tenure. He is taking over administration while Britain is facing an Economic crisis amid political turmoil.
