Books to read this summer

With the onset of summer season, there’s much to look forward to for book readers on the look-out for good literature to peruse in summer holidays.

Pakistani Edition of ‘Snuffing Out the Moon’


Osama Siddique’s debut and hitherto only novel has now been published in Pakistan as well under the popular publication house, Jhelum Book Corner. ‘Snuffing Out the Moon’, as it is called is now easily accessible to all Pakistanis who can get hold of the book and undertake a journey that commences with the emergence of Indus Valley Civilization and ends at the contemporary socio-political issues the region is smitten with, all the while providing historical information of the various dynasties which have ruled over the region and have played their respective parts in making the subcontinent what it is – with its good and its bad. A period novel, ‘Snuffing Out the Moon’ divides its chapters based on the evolution of the geopolitical nuances of the subcontinent.

Urdu Translation of ‘The God of Small Things’


Urdu language readers’ happiness will know no bounds after getting to know that the world famous South Asian novel by Arundhati Roy, ‘The God of Small Things’ has now been translated into Urdu by Parveen Malik, who has named this version as ‘Sisakty Log’, thus keeping in mind the crux of the novel which subtly focuses on the class difference rooted in the very mythology of Hindu religion and consequently, in India as well.

Moneeza Hashmi’s ‘Conversations with my father’


Poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s daughter Moneeza Hashmi, herself a significant figure of Pakistani art and culture, has, after 40 years, carried out a conversation with her father at length, taking her time to reflect on life over the years and then finally deciding to say what she couldn’t say to her father while he was alive. The questions which Moneeza Hashmi wanted to ask from her father, and the discussions she wished to hold with him are now compiled in this book called ‘Conversations with my father’ published by Sang-e-Meel.

Muhammad Ali has an M.Phil in classic and contemporary Pakistani television drama, Partition Novel and Literary Environmental Literature.
