China advances Moon mission with Shenzhou-23 launch

China has made significant progress in its mission to send astronauts to the Moon. The country recently launched the Shenzhou-23 mission carrying three astronauts into Earth’s orbit. One of the astronauts is expected to spend an entire year in orbit, an important step in China’s plan to send humans to the Moon by 2030.

The Long March 2F rocket was launched from the Jiuquan Launch Center in northwestern China and sent toward the Tiangong space station orbiting Earth. The three astronauts will work on several scientific projects aboard the space station.

However, the most important experiment involves one astronaut staying aboard the station for a full year to study the effects of a zero-gravity environment on the human body. The purpose of the research is to finalize preparations for future Moon missions and possible Mars missions.

China has not yet announced which of the three astronauts will remain on the station for the one-year mission. Typically, astronauts visiting the Chinese space station stay for about six months before being replaced by a new crew. The Shenzhou-23 mission is part of China’s broader lunar exploration program.

China aims to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030. To achieve this goal, the country is also testing new equipment. For example, the Mengzhou spacecraft is expected to conduct a test flight in Earth’s orbit sometime in 2026. This new spacecraft will eventually replace the current Shenzhou spacecraft and will be used to transport Chinese astronauts to the Moon.

China also plans to complete the first phase of a scientific base for astronauts on the lunar surface by 2035. Additionally, China is expected to send its first foreign astronaut to the Tiangong station later this year and that astronaut will be from Pakistan.
