The sentence was handed down by a federal court in New York following his conviction on charges that included racketeering, fraud, and money laundering.

Guo, who is also known as Miles Guo and Ho Wan Kwok, was once regarded as one of China’s wealthiest property developers. He left China in 2017 after facing corruption allegations from Chinese authorities and later sought asylum in the United States. After arriving in America, he reinvented himself as a vocal critic of the Chinese Communist Party and built a large following among members of the Chinese community living overseas.

According to prosecutors, Guo used his public image and political message to gain the trust of supporters between 2018 and 2023. They said he persuaded thousands of followers to invest in various business ventures and cryptocurrency projects by promising attractive financial returns and support for efforts promoting democracy in China. Instead of using the money as promised, prosecutors argued that Guo diverted much of it to finance an extravagant personal lifestyle.

Judge Analisa Torres said Guo had taken advantage of people who genuinely believed they were supporting a political cause. During sentencing, she stated that he exploited individuals who wanted to see democratic change in China and used their trust for his own financial benefit.

Prosecutors told the court that the money raised through the investment schemes paid for luxury assets including a 50,000 square foot mansion, a one million dollar Lamborghini, and a yacht worth 37 million dollars. They argued that these purchases showed how investor funds were used to support Guo’s personal wealth rather than the projects he had promoted.

Guo denied the accusations throughout the case. He insisted that the money was connected to his political activities and campaigns against the Chinese government rather than personal enrichment. His legal representatives have not publicly commented on the sentence.

Speaking after the ruling, US Attorney Sean S. Buckley said the case demonstrated that no individual is above the law regardless of their wealth or public profile. He added that Guo had abused the confidence placed in him by thousands of supporters for personal gain and that the lengthy prison sentence reflected the seriousness of his crimes.

Before leaving China, Guo had built a successful career in the country’s property sector and maintained close relationships with influential officials. His ties with the Chinese government later collapsed after corruption allegations emerged, leading him to relocate to the United States where he became one of Beijing’s most outspoken critics.

During his years in America, Guo also developed a close relationship with Steve Bannon, a former adviser to US President Donald Trump. The two frequently appeared together in online broadcasts and in 2020 announced the launch of the New Federal State of China, a political campaign that called for the removal of the Chinese Communist Party from power.

Bannon later faced separate legal troubles related to fundraising for a project to build a wall along the US Mexico border. His case was unrelated to Guo’s fraud trial. Although Bannon faced both state and federal charges, the federal prosecution ended after he received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump during the final hours of Trump’s first term in office.
