Chinese province’s 90 percent population is Covid-infected

Nearly 90 percent of people in China’s third-most populous province have been infected with Covid-19 while the country is facing a terrible wave of an unprecedented surge in cases.

By January 6 the province’s Covid-19 infection rate had reached 89 percent, the director of the health committee for the central province of Hainan told a press conference.

According to statistics about 88.5 million people have been infected with the coronavirus so far in Hainan Province which has a population of 99.4 million.

He said that the number of citizens visiting the fever clinic was at its peak on December 19 while after that it showed a continuous declining trend.

China lifted quarantine restrictions for travellers coming from abroad after a long gap of three years while travel restrictions were eased in the semi-autonomous city of Hong Kong and the border is being opened.

There are fears of an increase in infections after New Year’s Lunar Celebrations in the country later this month while thousands of families will visit their loved ones.

According to official figures, about 410,000 people in Hong Kong plan to travel to China in the next two months while about 7,000 people from China will travel to Hong Kong.

 

More than 120,000 people have been infected and 30 have died in the past week since China eased Covid restrictions in early December, official data showed.
