According to reports, Donald Trump had been charged with four crimes including obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress, conspiracy to defraud the United States, making false statements, and aiding or inciting an insurrection.

House Republican Liz Cheney said that the most shameful act was that when Capitol Hill was being attacked, President Trump was sitting in the dining room of the First Office watching the scenes of the coup on TV.

Representative Jamie Raskin, a Democratic select committee member said, “An insurrection is a rebellion against the authority of the United States. It is a grave federal offense, anchored in the Constitution itself.”

The committee’s chairperson, Bennie Thompson criticized Trump for bringing the mob to the Capitol and for destroying trust in the democratic process by making false charges of fraud time and time again.

“If the faith is broken, so is our democracy. Donald Trump broke that faith,” Thompson said.
