Criminal proceedings against Imran Khan started in Toshakhana reference

Criminal proceedings against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the Toshakhana reference have been started.

Additional Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal will hear the case against former prime minister Imran Khan tomorrow. The trial court has issued a notification to Imran Khan.

It is to be noted that the Election Commission had sent the Toshakhana reference to the District and Sessions Judge. The District Election Commissioner has said that the trial court should conduct a trial of the corrupt practice of Imran Khan. Toshakhana reference has been sent under sections 137, 170, and 167 of the Election Act.

It has been requested in the reference that the court should accept the complaint and punish Imran Khan. In a unanimous decision in the Toshakhana reference last month the ECP disqualified the former prime minister and declared that the PTI Chairman was no longer a member of the National Assembly.

According to the ECP, the PTI Chief presented a fraudulent affidavit and was deemed to be implicated in corrupt acts under Article 63(1) (p).

The ECP had further stated in the judgement that Imran Khan had made false statements and erroneous declarations and as a result of which he has also committed the offence of corrupt practices.
