‘Custodial death’ of labourer sparks protest in Thatta

To protest against what the locals believe as the mysterious death of a young peasant, Noor Muhammad Aka Nooru Mallah, in police custody, villagers blocked the National Highway at Chatochand on Wednesday.

Nooru Mallah who had been in the custody of Thatta police station in connection with a complaint of his wife for torturing her about 42 hours back, was found dead in the lockup washroom with his neck tied with the waistband.

The police claimed the accused had committed suicide, however, the parents didn’t accept the police plea and brought the body to the highway to lodge their protest.

SSP Thatta Adeel Hussain Chandio immediately suspended SHO Thatta police station Muhammad Hassan Pitafi, ASI Abdul Jabbar Laghari, and the police sepoy and send them for a quarter guard besides ordering an immediate inquiry into the issue.

During the sit-in and blockade of the National Highway, PPP MPA Syed Riaz Hussain Shah Sheerazi arrived at the site, had a dialogue with the demonstrators, and helped terminate the people and restore the stationary traffic.

The protestors then shouldered away the body of deceased Nooru Mallah for his burial in Qureshi Graveyard near Chilliya after performing his Janaza Prayer.

Assuring registration of FIR as per their will, SSP Thatta has suggested the parents of the deceased approach Thatta police station immediately.
