Deadly Russian missile and drone strike hits Kyiv, death toll rises to 10

KYIV: Russia launched a fresh wave of drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s capital early Monday, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 46 others in one of the deadliest strikes on Kyiv in recent weeks.

According to Ukrainian military officials, several missiles and drones targeted residential areas across the city, causing extensive destruction and leaving emergency crews racing to search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

The most severe damage was reported at a multi-storey residential apartment block, where a direct strike caused significant structural damage. Kyiv’s mayor said people were believed to be trapped under the rubble between the seventh and ninth floors, raising fears that the death toll could increase as rescue operations continue.

Firefighters, medical teams and rescue workers remained at the scene for hours, using heavy equipment and search dogs to locate survivors. Authorities urged residents to stay away from affected areas while emergency personnel worked to clear debris and assist the injured.

The latest assault follows another series of Russian drone and missile strikes carried out just days earlier across several Ukrainian regions. Those attacks killed at least eight people and left more than 34 others injured, while also causing widespread damage to homes and civilian infrastructure.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly accused Russia of targeting residential neighborhoods, saying the attacks have resulted in heavy civilian casualties and extensive destruction of property. Moscow has consistently maintained that it targets military-related infrastructure, although civilian areas have frequently been affected during the conflict.

The renewed bombardment highlights the continuing intensity of the war, with major Ukrainian cities remaining vulnerable to long-range missile and drone attacks despite strengthened air defense systems.

As rescue efforts continue in Kyiv, officials warn that casualty figures may rise as more victims are recovered from the wreckage. The latest strike has once again underscored the devastating humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict, with thousands of civilians continuing to bear the brunt of the fighting more than four years after the war began.
