Earthquake of magnitude 5.9 hit northwestern Turkiye

An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 hit the northwestern Duzce province of Turkiye.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 14 kilometres from Duzce in the Golyaka district, as per the country’s disaster management agency AFAD.

As per the Trt world report, strong shocks were also felt in Istanbul city, the capital Ankara and near regions.

Till now 46 people had reportedly gotten severe injuries.

The disaster department for Turkey reported that 37 people had been hurt in Duzce, one in Istanbul, six in Zonguldak, and one each in Sakarya and Zonguldak on the Black Sea coast, and one in Bolu in the southeast.

The interior minister of Turkey Suleyman Soylu stated that there had been no reports of fatalities.

Another 4.7 magnitude earthquake was reported some 20 minutes after the first. The Turkiye disaster management agency in the region can face 70 aftershocks.

People felt shocks at 4:08 am Turkiye local time when they were sleeping. The earthquake also caused a power cut in the region.

As per AFAD electricity in Duzce province was snapped as a precautionary measure.

Turkish Red Crescent president stated that our teams are supplying blankets, food, and water.

He also assured that additional blood supplies were sent to hospitals that may be needed in the region.
