ECP asks Punjab govt to hold local body elections

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asked the Punjab Government to guarantee local body elections in the province as soon as possible.

On Thursday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja presided over a meeting which was attended by the chief secretary of Punjab and other relevant authorities.

The meeting was informed that the Local Body elections in Punjab could not be held because the LB law was constantly changing.

The CEC stated that the provincial administration was required to hold LB elections in accordance with the constitution and rulings of the Supreme Court.

The PML-N Punjab Local Administration Act 2022 was once again being considered for repeal or amendment by the PTI government.

According to local media reports last month, the local government elections in Punjab will likely be further postponed.

Former CM Punjab Hamza Shehbaz’s administration repealed the PTI’s local government act by enacting its own local government law in June after taking office in Punjab.

However, the PTI government opted to reintroduce its own local government structure in the province after the PML-N administration was overthrown.

According to Punjab Local Government Minister Mian Mahmood-ur-Rasheed, the PTI government wanted to hold the local government elections as soon as possible so that the new Punjab Local Government Act could be approved by the provincial assembly.

The involved authorities had been given the green light by the minister to propose changes to the Local Government Act.
