ECP starts preparations for Punjab elections

Schedule for filing nomination papers, scrutiny issued, training of returning officers has also started

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has started preparations for the upcoming polls in Punjab. A schedule for filing nomination papers and their scrutiny has been issued while the training of the returning officers has also kicked off.

According to the ECP candidates can submit their nomination papers to the returning officers from March 12 to 14.

The election watchdog stated in a statement that the names of the candidates who have been nominated would be released on March 15 while the nomination papers will continue to be scrutinized until March 22. Appeals against the approval or rejection of nomination papers may be submitted until the 27th.

Up to the third of the next month, the appellate tribunal will decide appeals. On April 4, the updated list of applicants will be released. According to the ECP, candidates may withdraw their nomination papers up until April 5. Election emblems will be distributed to candidates on April 6. The 30th of April will be the voting day, it was added.

The Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to hold polls in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was resisted by the security agencies. The security institutions informed the attendees of the crucial law and order situation in both provinces during a meeting with ECP officials on Friday. Elections in Punjab and KP were opposed by members of the security establishments.

Training of ROs has been started in all divisions of Punjab including Islamabad, training of 36 DROs, 297 ROs and 594 AROs has started.

The one-day training of the election staff will continue till this evening while master trainers prepared by the Election Commission will train.

The training will be given on the powers including election conduct, polling process and Elections Act, while responsibilities of DROs, ROs, AROs will be informed in the training.
