ECP’s Punjab Assembly reserved seats notification gives PTI edge

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) seat-count in the Punjab Assembly has increased by five following an Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notification.

The ECP’s notification includes PTI’s five members including Batool Janjua, Saira Raza and Fouzia Abbas for women reserved seats along with Habakkuk Gul and Samuel Yaqub for reserved minorities’ seats.

Earlier, before the issuance of the notification, all five members were asked to appear before ECP for scrutiny of papers.

PTI’s 25 dissident members, including five reserved seat members who had voted for Hamza Shehbaz in the Punjab chief minister elections were de-seated as per the order of the Supreme Court under Article 63-A.

PTI had requested to issue a notification of the appointment upon dissident seat members.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry has tweeted that his party won the five seats after a long battle. He said that Hamza’s government was counting its last days.

PML-N, through lawyer Mansoor Awan has challenged the decision of the LHC. LHC’s division bench chaired by Justice Shahid Karim would hear the matter.

The petition has demanded from the court that as per law, there should be allocation of reserved seats on basis of proportional representation. The petition has prayed to set aside the previous order of June 27 because that was contrary to Article 106(3)(c) and 224(4) and 224(6) of the constitution.
