England set a record by scoring 500 runs, crushing Pakistan in Rawalpindi on the first day of a Test match on Thursday.

The tourists had amassed a score of 506-4 at the end of play thanks to the hundreds of four English batsmen.

The 494 runs Australia scored against South Africa in Sydney in 1910 still stand as the previous record for the opening day of a test match.

Only four other days have seen more than 500 runs scored, three of those instances by England and one by Sri Lanka, but never on the first day of a Test.

The highest score was 588, which England amassed on day two of a Test match against India in 1936.

Earlier, England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat against Pakistan in the first test on Thursday.

The touring team changed one player from their earlier lineup, adding all-rounder Liam Livingstone and Will Jacks in place of Ben Foakes, who made his test debut.

Pakistan named four debutants in their playing 11 including Saud Shakeel, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Ali, and Zahid Mehmood.

This will be England’s first test visit to Pakistan since 2005, and they will also play at Multan and Karachi.
