Scientists say the event is developing with unusual intensity and could bring widespread droughts, floods, heatwaves and wildfires over the coming months.

El Nino is a natural climate pattern that occurs when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal. These warmer waters affect global weather systems by changing wind patterns, air pressure and rainfall. The phenomenon usually appears every two to seven years and often lasts between nine and twelve months.

According to Tim Stockdale, an El Nino specialist at the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, current forecasts suggest this year’s event could reach an unprecedented level of strength. He said climate models have shown remarkable agreement in predicting an extremely powerful El Nino, something researchers have not seen in more than thirty years of monitoring.

Stockdale explained that while weather forecasting can never be completely certain, it would be a major surprise if this El Nino did not set new records. He believes the conditions are pointing toward an event that could become one of the most significant in modern history.

Although El Nino generally reaches its highest intensity between November and February, its full impact on global temperatures is often felt later. Scientists note that when combined with climate change caused by human activity, El Nino can push global temperatures even higher. Previous El Nino events contributed to record breaking heat around the world, making recent years among the hottest ever recorded.

Weather agencies have already begun issuing warnings. The United States weather service confirmed last month that El Nino had officially developed and was expected to strengthen further. The World Meteorological Organization has also predicted that the event will rapidly intensify during the coming months.

International aid agencies are preparing for the possible consequences. United Nations food organisations have appealed for additional funding to help vulnerable countries reduce the impact before conditions worsen. Governments in several regions are also developing emergency plans to protect communities that could face extreme weather.

In India, agricultural officials are preparing contingency measures to support farmers if rainfall decreases during the growing season. El Nino often weakens the South Asian monsoon, reducing the rainfall that millions of farmers depend on for crops and livelihoods. Lower rainfall can affect food production, water supplies and rural incomes across the region.

Australia is also expected to experience hotter and drier weather, increasing the risk of drought, heatwaves and bushfires. Similar dry conditions are forecast for parts of southern, western, central and eastern Africa, where reduced rainfall could place additional pressure on farming and water resources.

At the same time, other regions may experience the opposite effect. Countries in the Horn of Africa are likely to receive above average rainfall, while coastal areas of Peru and Ecuador could face heavy rain, flooding and landslides. Northern Brazil is also expected to become drier than usual, creating conditions that increase the risk of wildfires in the Amazon rainforest.

Experts say governments and communities should prepare early because the effects of a powerful El Nino can vary widely from one region to another, bringing both environmental and economic challenges around the world.
