Maulana Fazlur Rehman, President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), has left for London.
According to sources, Fazlur Rehman is scheduled to meet Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in London to talk about the current situation as the country’s politics experience one of the worst upheavals in history due to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) facing mass exodus and clampdown in the wake of May 9 protests.
The JUI-F leader, who is also the leader of the political parties’ coalition Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) — the PTI’s unified foe — would remain in UK for a few days and meet with his party members active in various cities, according to reports.
Following PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9 in connection with the £190 million settlement case and the ensuing violent riots, in which his fans and workers assaulted and burned ablaze public facilities practically all throughout the country, the party has seen a large exodus of leaders.
As a result of the vandalism on May 9, some PTI figures, including close allies of Khan, have announced their departure from the party. Some have blamed Khan’s policies for the attacks on the military sites.
Following the extraordinary attacks on defence and public property, a crackdown on the PTI was initiated in order to apprehend the suspect responsible for the damage, with the highest civil-military leadership of the nation promising to prosecute rioters in accordance with applicable laws, including the Army Act.
