FBR denies issuance of any SRO about import of duty and tax-free bulletproof cars

Criticism caused delayed, notification to be issued after approval from PM Secretariat and Finance Minister, reports

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has stated that it did not issue any Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) about the import of duty and tax-free bulletproof cars.

FBR’s statement has said that the news on different media sections was not based on correct facts; further stating that this kind of facility was approved by the federal cabinet in a decision in 2019 but so far no notification to the effect was issued.

Due to growing criticism over the government’s decision the notification of FBR was delayed, a media report has claimed. It has also said that now the notification would be issued after approval from the Prime Minister Secretariat and the Finance Minister.

There were reports on different media platforms that retired three and four-star armed forces officers will be allowed to import duty-free bulletproof vehicles upto 6,000cc. It was also quoted in the media that the federal cabinet approved the policy but it would be subject to the final approval of the premier.

According to media reports, the such facility would also be available to all three services chiefs and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee soon after their retirement.

Some media reports have also claimed that the official notification was signed by the member of customs (policy) of FBR but it wasn’t yet posted on the website.

According to the details of the federal cabinet’s decision, four-star armed forces officers could import two bulletproof vehicles with engine capacity of up to 6,000cc duty-free whereas three-star officers would be able to import one duty-free bulletproof vehicle after retirement. The vehicles could not be sold in the market for five years duration and FBR’s approval will be mandatory for the purpose.
