Federal cabinet approves committee to consider treason case against top PTI leaders

Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has said that the federal cabinet had approved the formation of a committee to deliberate over filing of a reference of treason against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) top leaders.

Speaking in a press conference after the meeting of the federal cabinet, the information minister said that approval of the formation of the committee under Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar had been given by the federal cabinet.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the committee under the law minister would present suggestions in the next cabinet meeting.

The development comes after Thursday’s Supreme Court judgment which said that former National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri’s unilateral ruling, wherein he dismissed the no-confidence motion against former prime minister Imran Khan, did not have parliamentary immunity.

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial stated in the ruling that Suri had breached his constitutional duty and his April 3 ruling had failed to qualify for protection of internal parliamentary proceedings under Article 69(1) of the constitution.

The information minister also said that a commission had been formed to probe the allegations made by Tayyaba Gul, who had claimed that she was held against her will at the PM house for 18 days when Imran Khan was prime minister.

Marriyum Aurangzeb added that the law minister would come up with the terms of reference, the names of the chairman and panel members of the said commission, and put them before the federal cabinet.

She also said that the commission would be time-bound under the Commission of Inquiries Act 2017.
