Federal government appoints Asim Ahmed as FBR chairman

The federal government on Wednesday appointed Asim Ahmed as chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

A notification for this purpose was issued today. The cabinet greenlit a summary to remove Ashfaq Ahmed Khan from the post and appointed Asim as the new chairman FBR.

Asim previously served as the FBR chairman in 2021 for a period of few months but was replaced after a data-hacking incident occurred at the tax-collection authority. He is currently serving as an Inland Revenue Officer (IRS) of Grade 21 and is number three on the seniority list of IRS officers.

“With the approval of the federal government, Mr Asim Ahmad, a BS-21 officer of Inland Revenue Service (IRS), is appointed as chairman, Federal Board of Revenue under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1970, with immediate effect and until further orders,” the notification issued by the Establishment Division read.

The new FBR chairman will be faced with a challenge for materializing an ambitious Rs6.1 trillion tax collection target for the ongoing fiscal year.
