FIA acted beyond jurisdiction by registering case on controversial tweet: IHC

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has acted beyond its jurisdiction by registering a case on a controversial tweet, Islamabad High Court (IHC) ruled on Saturday.

A case related to a campaign against the institutions on social media was taken up by the IHC and the verdict of the case has been announced. The petition of a citizen was accepted by Justice Babar Sattar of IHC. FIA’s case against posting a controversial tweet was quashed by the judge of IHC.

The court noted that FIA had made a mockery of the state after registering the case. It was also said that the case was aimed at imposing illegal censorship on freedom of expression.

The court verdict also stated that posting a tweet with any hashtag was not tantamount to committing a crime. It also stated that if any person had said something wrong by himself in the content of a tweet only then wrongdoing could be established.

The order also stated that by registering such cases FIA wanted to create suspicion in the public.

It is important to mention that the Twitter user of the said tweet had spoken of enforced disappearances and had referred to Vigo’s vehicle in the context.
