Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi was arrested again on Wednesday but this time by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in a money laundering case after he acquired bail in another case.

An anti-corruption court ordered the government to release Elahi, who had been detained for over three weeks in connection with an investigation into unauthorized hiring practices in the Punjab Assembly, on bail with an Rs1 million bond.

A fresh complaint was filed accusing the PTI president and his son Moonis Elahi of money laundering within hours of the release orders.

Elahi purposefully delayed providing the surety bond in the expectation that a high court would grant protection bail in the new case this morning. As a result, he stayed at the Camp Jail until he was ultimately taken into custody by FIA agents from the detention facility.

The FIA agents detained the former chief minister of Punjab and had him examined at the Services General Hospital in Lahore before taking him to jail.

Elahi was then officially arrested after a medical test found him to be in good health. He was then brought before a court magistrate.

The PTI leader would likely be physically detained for 14 days by the FIA.

During the exchange of information on the money laundering case, reports said that Elahi and his son Moonis Elahi had deposited money totaling billions of rupees in five Panama firms. They said that the pair purchased Panamanian businesses for “money laundering.”

The FIA has chosen to have red warrants filed against Moonis Elahi to bring him home, the reports continued.
