FIA detains PTI leader Saifullah Niazi from Senate premises

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Saifullah Niazi was taken into custody in Islamabad from the Senate premises by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime division.

On Friday, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah while addressing the media confirmed the news of Saifullah Niazi’s arrest which was earlier denied by FIA.

Rana Sanaullah stated, “He was not appearing for investigation in a foreign funding case. He has been taken into custody, so he can be questioned regarding the case.”

The minister stated that the PTI senator will be taken into custody provided “required legal procedures” are followed.

The senator was detained on suspicion of operating an unauthorized website that was being used for nefarious fundraising.

Founding member of the PTI, Hamid Zaman was also detained by the FIA on Friday in connection with the foreign funding case.

According to media reports, Zaman was arrested from his office on Waris Road in Lahore.

Media reports also suggest that Zaman served as the secretary of the Insaf Trust in 2013, which had $625,000 in its bank accounts, and the party’s welfare organization did not adhere to all norms and regulations.

FIA Cyber Crime Wing on September 13 raided Niazi’s house and confiscated his laptop, phone, and other technology gadgets.

Saifullah Niazi two days later filed a privilege motion in a Senate meeting against the Islamabad police and the FIA for violating his privacy.
