An extraordinary flood situation has been witnessed in River Swat at under-construction
Mohmand Dam Project site. Resultantly, flood water entered the diversion tunnels breaching and overtopping the protection dyke, which adversely affected the construction activities at the project, said a Wapda spokesperson on Friday.
“Exceptionally high-water flows are expected in River Swat in the coming hours. With this in view, project management has taken precautionary measures and is closely watching the situation to mitigate further damage.”
Meanwhile, the railways suspended the operation of passenger trains between Hyderabad and Khanpur for five days. The decision was made in a meeting held at railways headquarters and presided over by Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique.
Pakistan Railways (PR), however, would continue freight and cargo operation on the said track. Traffic on ML-II and ML-III was already closed due to the flood situation. A committee of the PR comprising engineers of its civil department was formed to start a review of the bridges’ situation in flood-hit areas from Saturday morning and submit reports on them daily.
