Former Indian captain Azharuddin backs Babar Azam for captaincy role

Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin supported Babar Azam in his role as Pakistan’s cricket team captain but suggested that he rethink his choice of batting position.

Azharuddin claimed that although Babar is a top-tier player playing aggressively is not his natural style when addressing a gathering of Pakistani journalists in Abu Dhabi.

“Babar Azam has his own approach to playing cricket; he does not play with aggression. He possesses a range of shots and has been successful with them.”

He won’t deviate from his natural manner, so we shouldn’t anticipate it,” Azhar remarked.

However, the former Indian captain suggested that Babar thinks about switching to a different batting position.

“We just observed that he had trouble dealing with the swing. He needs to switch positions at bat if he is having trouble.”

The Pakistani captain is not a natural opening hitter, the senior cricketer stated, adding that if he were in the Pakistani team’s dressing room, he would have been encouraged to change his batting position.

Azhar is in the United Arab Emirates taking part as a commentator in the first International League T20 event.

The cricketer endorsed Babar as captain and said that he should be let to command the Pakistani team constantly.

“You can’t make that rapid of a judgement about a captain… after a few years in the position, a player should be evaluated as a captain and in my opinion, Babar should be let to remain in that capacity.”
