The Sindh Health Minister, Dr. Azra Pechuho, has rejected the proposed amendments to the Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition Act, stating that the sale of formula milk will only be allowed at medical stores and strictly with a doctor’s prescription.
The Minister of Health stated that the approved amendments to the Protection and Promotion of Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition Act 2023 are in effect.
Despite a recent meeting between representatives of the baby food industry and the Health Minister, no fruitful outcome was achieved. As per the amendments, formula milk for infants up to 36 months will be considered formula milk, and it will only be provided to newborns based on a doctor’s recommendation.
It is important to note that the Sindh Cabinet had approved the amendments to the Protection and Promotion of Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition Act 2023 a few days ago.
