‘Freedom of religion fundamental in democracy’: US condemns blasphemous remarks by BJP officials

US has condemned the remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Indian Bharatiya Janata Party leadership and has stressed on freedom of religion and human rights.

US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price, in a press conference on Thursday, condemned the derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Ned Price said that the remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were condemnable, and that the US was glad that the BJP publicly condemned the comments.

He added that the US had been regularly engaging with the Indian government on freedom of religion, belief and other human rights issues.

Answering a question about US relations with Pakistan, he said that Pakistan was a partner of US and it sought a partnership based on mutual interests.

He said that Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal had a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken last month where the two had a constructive dialogue on issues such as food security.

Answering question about India purchasing oil from Russia, Price said that India’s relationship with Russia had developed over decades, but the US had made clear to its “Indian partners” that they were willing to engage with them.
