Gang-rape victim found dead at her house

A victim of gang-rape was found dead at her house in village Mehran Soomro within the limits of Kaloi Town of Tharparkar, Minute Mirror learnt on Monday.

The body of the victim was sent to Taluka Hospital Dilpo Town for postmortem on late Sunday night.

The girl was reportedly abducted by some “unknown” persons five days back and kidnappers, who, after raping her had left her at a deserted place near her village.

Due to criminal assault on her for many hours, her condition deteriorated and she was found unconscious by her relatives. The relatives tried to register the complaint at Kaloi Police Station but officials refused to register the gang-rape case against culprits, allegedly saying that they had been directed by influential political figures of the district not to register the case.

The victim in her written complaint with police had stated that she was criminally assaulted when she was going to Hyderabad to receive official documents of the pension of her father who died few months back.

The brother of the victim said that influential people had pressured them to settle the serious matter through the jirga (the tribal court). He said that his sister, as a result of the gang-rape, had committed suicide. She had also broken up with her fiance.

“The assault and subsequent pressure of the influential people on her and her family members and her breakup left her with no other option but to commit suicide,” said her brother.

The station house officer of Kaloi Police Station, when contacted, told that he had sent an assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) to meet the relatives so that they could proceed ahead with investigation into the incident.

It is pertinent to note that this is the fifth Thari girl who has ended her life after being allegedly raped in the recent years. Over past five years, more than six hundred people, mostly women and young girls, died by suicide but area police has never bothered to properly investigate the reasons behind such extreme steps despite massive coverage to such suspected cases of suicide in the desert district.
