Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) leader Maryam Nawaz Sharif has said that Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed should not be appointed on important and significant positions as he allegedly tampered with justice.
Maryam Nawaz said on Wednesday in a media address that Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed should be held accountable for his role in manipulating judicial proceedings, instead of being given another important office. She added that Hameed’s appointment was a ‘slap in the face’ of the nation and rule of law.
The PML-N leader furthered that the country under the current Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government seemed like a warzone as the former government’s progress was all rendered useless.
Sharif also said that the country suffered because there was no respect for due legal procedures as she herself was questioned at length by a retired brigadier when she appeared in front of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for the Avenfield case. She added that no National Accountability Bureau (NAB) official questioned her during the entirety of the process. Sharif alleged that Hameed was involved in tampering with the judicial process in the Avenfield reference against her in court.
Sharif filed an appeal to overturn the Avenfield case verdict at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday. In her petition, Sharif cited a speech in which IHC Judge Shahukat Aziz Siddiqui was recorded to have said that the country’s top intelligence agency was influencing the Avenfield decision.
Later in a tweet, Sharif named Hameed as the intelligence officer that Siddiqui was referring to. She stated that the verdict against her was ‘pre-planned’, and Hameed had a role to play in her eventual fate
Sharif took Hameed to task and said that he misused the power and prestige granted to him by the armed forces for personal gains
In 2018, Sharif’s father Nawaz Sharif and husband Junaid Safdar were all handed imprisonment sentences of different years for holding assets that were beyond their declared sources of income. Sharif has sought annulment of the decision before, which was rejected. This time too, the IHC rejected her appeal and said that she brought up the same reasons as she did in her previous appeal.
Sharif’s vociferous opposition to Hameed surfaced when it was announced that the former director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was given the new position of the Peshawar corps commander on Wednesday.
