ISLAMABAD: In a major diplomatic breakthrough that could reshape the political landscape of the Middle East, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the United States and Iran have reached a peace agreement following prolonged negotiations aimed at ending months of military confrontation.

According to the prime ministerof Pakistan Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, both countries have agreed to halt military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon, paving the way for a formal peace process. The agreement is expected to be officially signed during a ceremony in Switzerland on June 19, marking what could become one of the most significant diplomatic developments in the region in recent years.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said extensive diplomatic engagement by regional and international partners helped create the conditions necessary for the breakthrough. Iran’s  State media confirmed US- Iran peace deal

Iran also confirmed the agreement through official channels. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the deal had been reached and indicated that further negotiations would continue during a ceasefire period. Future discussions are expected to focus on sanctions relief, regional security arrangements and issues related to Iran’s nuclear programme.

Global Leaders Appreciation

While international leaders largely welcomed the development, reactions within Iran were mixed. Iran’s military leadership portrayed the agreement as a strategic victory, arguing that resistance by Iranian forces and allied groups compelled the United States and Israel to change course. State media echoed that narrative, presenting the accord as evidence of Iran’s resilience during the conflict.

However, some hardline political factions criticized senior Iranian officials involved in the negotiations, accusing them of compromising positions previously advocated by the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani praised the breakthrough and thanked Pakistan for its role in facilitating dialogue. He expressed hope that all parties would participate in upcoming negotiations with a constructive approach and emphasized Qatar’s commitment to promoting peace through diplomacy.

Keir Starmer welcomed US- Iran peace deal

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also welcomed the accord, calling it an important step toward ending the conflict and restoring regional stability. He stressed the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz fully and ensure uninterrupted navigation through one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes. Starmer further emphasized that any commitments concerning Iran’s nuclear activities must be transparent, verifiable and fully implemented to guarantee long-term peace.

The conflict between the United States and Iran had generated widespread concerns across the globe, disrupting energy markets, increasing shipping risks and heightening fears of a broader regional war.
