‘Good omen for constitutional supremacy’: Nawaz lauds Asma Jahangir Group’s win in SCBA elections

SCBA president-elect Ahsan Bhoon reiterates commitment to uphold democracy in Pakistan

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has congratulated advocate Supreme Court (SC) Ahsan Bhoon of the Independent Group for claiming a landslide victory in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections and termed it a good signal for the country’s struggle for ‘constitutional supremacy’.

In a tweet on Thursday, the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) supreme leader congratulated Ahsan Boon on the ‘landslide victory’ in SCBA elections. He stated that Bhoon winning the SCBA presidential seat signalled good fortune for the country’s struggle for ‘constitutional supremacy’.

Sharif added that the Asma Jehangir Group (formally known as the Independent Group), always strove for restoration of democratic values.

Fourteen candidates contended for five seats but the main battle for votes was between presidential candidates, Bhoon and Latif Khosa of the Hamid Khan-led Professional Group.

According to unofficial results, Bhoon garnered 1,548 votes while Pakistan Peoples Party’s Khosa got 920. Prior to elections, both candidates committed to constitutional supremacy and lawyer welfare in their mandates.

Upon winning the election, Bhoon reiterated his commitment to upholding democratic principles in Pakistan.

Bhoon also tweeted a thank-you note for Sharif and said he was grateful to the PML-N supremo for his guidance and support in the way of democracy. He also thanked the legal fraternity for their support in making his victory a reality.

Meanwhile, Azad Group candidates Khawar Ikram Bhatti and Wasim Mumtaz Malik were elected vice president and secretary of Punjab respectively. Election Chairman Afrasiab Khan would be announcing the official results on November 3.
