Government considering doing away with Nawaz’s sentence: Rana Sanaullah

Interior minister says govt has power to cancel, suspend accused’s sentence; give chance to plead case afresh

Federal Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan has said that the government was considering to cancel or suspend punishment of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif under the legal provisions available both with the federal and provincial governments.

Federal Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan told a local news channel that the government had the powers to cancel or suspend the punishment of an accused and offer him a chance to plead his case afresh. He said that the provisions could be utilized to provide relief to Nawaz and others.

However, he added, Nawaz would need to make a decision about returning to Pakistan on the basis of his health.

The PML-N supremo is in self-exile in London where he went for medical treatment in November 2019.

The minister also implied at amending the constitution and relevant laws, for empowering the presiding officer to administer oath to the prime minister or chief minister.

He said such a step was necessary after the Punjab crisis during which the oath-taking ceremony of Hamza Shehbaz was delayed for weeks. In the future, the presiding officer conducting the election of the prime minister or the chief minister would be empowered to administer the oath of office.
