Govt to possibly delay second phase of KP local body polls until March

KP IGP cites bad weather as reason for postponement of second leg of local government elections

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Inspector General of Police (IGP) Moazzam Jah Ansari has revealed that the provincial government may ask the Election Commission of Pakistan to delay the second stage of the local government elections until the second or third week of March.

Briefing media over the police’s performance at the Central Police Office, Ansari said that a meeting presided by KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan deliberated the second stage of the local government elections.

According to media reports, the IGP said that a majority of the 18 districts, where polls were set to be held, were beset by bad weather. He added that it would be difficult to hold the elections as most of the areas were snowed-in.

Ansari said the police guaranteed security in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in spite of concerns resulting from the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The IDP said the police have ensured the security of over 9,000 polling stations in the recently held local government elections.

Meanwhile, the opposition in the KP Assembly has disputed the suggested Tehsil Local Government Rules of Business for administrating the recently elected tehsil councils.

Leader of the Opposition in KP Assembly Akram Khan Durrani told the assembly that the rules stood against the constitution and the Local Government Act.

He added that the powers of mayors and chairmen of local bodies was reduced by the rules.

Durrani added that mayors and chairmen of the city would now have to operate under the relevant assistant commissioners if the rules were approved.
