ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that a severe heatwave is expected to affect large parts of the country from June 7 to June 12, with temperatures forecast to rise significantly above normal levels in several regions.

According to the Met Office, the ongoing weather pattern is likely to trigger intense heat conditions across Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses and placing additional strain on water and energy resources.

Karachi is expected to experience particularly hot conditions during the coming days, with daytime temperatures likely to fluctuate between 40°C and 43°C. High humidity levels in the coastal city may further increase discomfort, making the weather feel even hotter than the actual temperature.

The PMD said that several districts of Sindh and Balochistan could witness extreme temperatures ranging from 48°C to 51°C, placing these areas among the hottest locations in the country. Such conditions may lead to heat stress, dehydration, and other health complications, especially for vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

In Punjab, temperatures are forecast to remain between 44°C and 48°C in a number of districts, while the plain areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also expected to endure intense heat, with mercury levels likely to reach between 41°C and 46°C.

Meteorologists attributed the anticipated heatwave to the presence of a strong high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, which is expected to suppress cloud formation and intensify daytime heating across much of the country.

Health experts have urged citizens to take precautionary measures during the heatwave period. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during peak daytime hours between 10am and 4pm. Authorities also recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored clothing, and limiting strenuous outdoor activities.

The PMD has urged provincial and local administrations to remain vigilant and ensure that emergency response mechanisms are in place to deal with potential heat-related incidents. Farmers have also been advised to manage irrigation schedules carefully to protect crops from the effects of extreme temperatures.
