Heavy rainfall wreaks havoc in Karachi

Several areas of the largest metropolis submerged, casualties reported

Heavy rainfall in Karachi submerged several areas of the largest metropolis of Pakistan causing electricity to shut down for hours.

Social media has been overloaded with videos showing roads turned into rivers and complaints of electricity shut-down. Despite the provincial government’s claims to clean the drains, this overnight shower has battered the situation causing an accumulation of rain water on roads.

Atif 28-year-old and 25-year-old Hassan have been reported dead after a heavy downpour, police told the media. Many roads including the submarine chowk underpass, KPT underpass and underpass near Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine have been closed due to accumulated rainwater.

So far the rainfall in different areas of the city as per the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), PAF Masroor Base received the highest 119.5mm, DHA phase 2 received 106.6mm, Quaid Abad 76mm, PAF Faisal Base 65mm, Orangi Town 56.2mm, old airport area 49.8mm, Gulshan-e-Hadeed 46.5mm, Nazimabad 31.8mm, Jinnah Terminal 29.6mm, University Road 14.8mm, Surjani Town 14.4mm, Gadap Town 9.2mm, North Karachi 2.3mm and Saadi Town received 1.1mm.

After the devastating condition on roads, Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon has urged the people of Karachi to stay at home and away from electricity poles, drains and maintenance holes.

Met department has predicted more rainfall in Karachi as well as in other areas of Sindh including Thatha, Badin and Hyderabad. Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz has said that two more rain systems are expected to enter the Sindh province after one another causing rainfall and resultantly flooding in low-lying areas.
