Hina Rabbani Khar reaches Paris for FATF meet

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar has reached Paris for the meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Khar, while leading a delegation, held meetings with the head of Foreign Affairs Commission of the French National Assembly and Christian Cambon, president of the Commission for Foreign Affairs.

During the meetings, bilateral relations between Pakistan and France were discussed including situation of floods, parliamentary cooperation along with regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Khar extended invitation to both officials for visit to Pakistan so that parliamentary contacts could be strengthened between the two countries.

The FATF plenary will be held on October 20-October 21 in Paris under the presidency of T Raja Kumar.

Pakistan’s fate of getting out of the FATF Grey List will be decided in the important meeting. Pakistan having completed its 34-points action plan, as directed by FATF, is hopeful of exiting the Grey List.

The 34-point action plan assigned to Pakistan was related to money laundering and terror financing.

Delegates representing 206 members of the global network and observer organizations, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations (UN), the World Bank (WB), Interpol and the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units, will participate in the Working Group and Plenary meetings in Paris.

Pakistan was included under an increased monitoring list in June 2018 for deficiencies in its legal, financial, regulatory, investigations, prosecution, judicial and non-government sectors to fight money laundering and combat terror financing considered a serious threat to the global financial system.

A 15-member joint delegation of the FATF and its Sydney-based regional affiliate, Asia Pacific Group, had paid an onsite visit to Pakistan from Aug 29 to Sept 2 to verify the country’s compliance with the 34-point action plan committed with the FATF.
