Holocaust and Palestinians

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is being grilled for comparing the killing of Palestinians to the Holocaust. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz took Abbas’s remarks out of context and voiced his ‘disgust’ in a tweet. Moreover, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid also took the liberty to comment on this situation and lambasted the Palestinian president by saying that his remarks were outrageous. He reminded the President of the killing of six million Jews, including one and a half million Jewish children, in the Holocaust.

The tragedy of the Holocaust is one of the darkest parts of European history. There is no second opinion on the tragic past of European Jews who were singled out and killed mercilessly by the Germans under Hitler’s regime. Families of the Jews who were killed still have trauma embedded in them and no compensation will ever be able to heal them. However, the Holocaust is history: history that will never be forgotten and history that must not be repeated, especially by those whose ancestors were targeted during that time. Israel was formed for many reasons and one of them was compensation for the Holocaust. Israel was formed on Palestinian grounds; a country’s people were forced out to make space for European foreigners. Israel stands on the blood and bones of thousands of Palestinians who have been killed by the Israel Defense Forces.

What the Palestinian President said was taken completely out of context because the Europeans have such deep-rooted guilt of the Holocaust and such close ties with Israel that any mention of the word makes them tremble. Mahmoud Abbas only mentioned the atrocities that Israel has been committing over the years from the first Nakba till now. The thought of concentration camps sends chills down the spines of the descendants of those who planned and executed the Holocaust and so they support all actions of Jewish Israel without noticing the concentration camp that Israel has made out of the Gaza strip. It is not that these people are blind to the activities of Israel, they do not want to see what this barbaric state is up to.

Since 1948 Israel has been responsible for the ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. More than 530 villages were destroyed when the Zionists moved into their so-called ‘promised land’. Israel has been given a free hand to kill, torture and plunder people and villages it pleases. It is good that the Israeli prime minister mentioned children in his tweet as that shows that he knows children are innocent and must not be treated the way Israel treats Palestinian children. The Israeli prisons are full of young Palestinian children. However, for Israel, the only children that are innocent and matter are their own or the ones who lost their lives in the Holocaust. Palestinian children, on the other hand, cannot be considered as children and so they can be killed whenever Israel pleases.

The world chooses to turn a blind eye every time Israel kills Palestinians. It turns a blind eye when Jews from all over the world are invited to live on Palestinian land by terror and illegal occupation. It is only when a comparison is made with the Holocaust that the world speaks up. The world needs to stop giving Israel a free pass on all of its terrorist acts because of the Holocaust.
