IHC accepts apology, dismisses Imaan Mazari case

The Islamabad High Court on Monday dismissed the defamation case against Imaan Mazari after accepting her apology.

The hearing of the case was conducted in the court of IHC chief justice, where Mazari had appeared along with her lawyer Advocate Zainab Janjua.

Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Athar Minallah said during the hearing that Imaan Mazari had apologized, and questioned, “What else do you [prosecution] want?”

The lawyer from the Defence Ministry said in response that Mazari should have apologized in front of the press. The CJ observed that Mazari’s mental condition should be considered after what happened to her mother.

Mazari’s lawyer had stated in the court that they had become part of the investigations despite concerns. She told the court that on the first day, they had said that there was no justification for Mazari’s remarks.

Talking about the police investigation, the lawyer said that they had told the police about submitting a written statement as they were writing differently from our statements.

At the end of the arguments, the IHC CJ accepted Mazari’s plea and dismissed the case along with the FIR against her.

On the complaint from Lt. Colonel Syed Humayoun Iftikhar (Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch GHQ), the First Investigation Report (FIR) was registered against Imaan Mazari on May 26 at Islamabad’s Ramna police station.

Section 505 was charged against Mazari. According to the FIR, Mazari had made a derogatory and hateful statement in the media against the military.
