IHC issues notice to IG Islamabad over PTI member’s contempt plea

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) sent a notice to the Islamabad Inspector-General of Police Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan for an explanation after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders were re-arrested on Friday despite court orders.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the case.

The IG has until Monday, May 22, to provide his answer to the notice. On the other side, the court also sent a notice on the subject to the Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan.

Following the re-arrest of PTI leaders including PTI SeniorVice-President Dr. Shireen Mazari, Ali Muhammad Khan, and Maleeka Bukhari after they were given bail, notices were issued during the hearing of many applications seeking contempt of court proceedings against police personnel.

After being granted respite by the IHC, which pleaded with authorities not to detain them once again, the three lawmakers were detained once still being more.

While Khan and Bukhari were both re-arrested and are still being held in the Adiala Jail, Mazari was arrested on Wednesday night, the same day that she was freed by a local court.

The IHC demanded information about the cases brought against Asad Umar, the secretary general of the PTI, by Monday in a different hearing.

Justice Aurangzeb heard his appeal opposing his arrest under 3MPO to learn more about the cases brought against the PTI leader. The anti-terrorist team arrested the lawmaker on May 10.

PTI leader and attorney Babar Awan were present in court during the proceedings to represent the petitioner.

He argued that the court should set the cases’ hearing dates for Monday and requested information regarding the number of cases filed against Umar.

“Do you want to enjoy your weekend here?” Justice Aurangzeb retorted with irony.

The hearing was subsequently postponed until Monday after the court accepted the plea and sent letters to all parties.
