IHC orders ECP to hold local body elections in Islamabad tomorrow

Court sets aside December 19 order of Interior Ministry, December 27 order of ECP

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday has ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold local body elections in the federal capital as per schedule.

 

On the other hand, the ECP has convened an emergency meeting. The decision of the IHC along with conducting local bodies elections will be discussed. IHC heard the petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Ali Nawaz Awan and Jamaat-e-Islami challenging the postponement of local body elections.

 

Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir of the Islamabad High Court suspended the notification postponing the election.

 

The IHC has ordered the ECP to hold local body elections as per schedule on December 31 ordering the federal government to assist in ensuring elections.

 

The court also set aside the December 19 order of the Interior Ministry and the December 27 order of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
