Imran Khan’s interim bail extended till July 30, asked to appear in court

A district and sessions court in Islamabad has extended the interim bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan in 11 cases related to alleged violence and vandalism during the party’s Azadi March on May 25.

Imran Khan had sought pre-arrest bails in FIRs registered against him before District and Sessions (west) Court Judge Kamran Basharat Mufti.

On Thursday, Islamabad district and sessions court extended interim bail for PTI Chairman Imran Khan, till July 30 in 11 instances involving alleged acts of violence and destruction of public property.

According to Junior Counsel Rai Tajamul, the PTI chairman did not appear in court as he was in Lahore, and his attorney Babar Awan was out on business.

The judge stated that Imran’s presence in court was important, and said that he was required to appear in case 425 filed at the Kohsar police station, which pertained to treason.

The judge emphasized that “new bail has to be given in this FIR” and that he would only pass the orders when the accused arrived in court.

Imran Khan’s attorney responded by assuring the judge that his client would show up at the upcoming hearing, which was set for July 30.

On May 26, a first information report (FIR) was filed at the Kohsar police station in response to a complaint made by Sub-Inspector (SI) Asif Raza under Sections 109 (abetment), 148 (rioting with a deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 186 (obstructing public service), 188 (disobedience), 353 (assault on public servant), 427 (causing damage) and 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intentions of causing damage) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
