India confirms ‘accidental firing’ of missile into Pakistan

India has confirmed that it had accidently fired a missile into Pakistani territory on March 9, 2022.

According to a statement released by the Press Information Bureau of the Defence Wing, the accidental firing of the missile was the result of a “technical malfunction in the course of a routine maintenance”.

The statement said that the Indian government had taken a serious view of the incident and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry.

The statement said that the incident was deeply regrettable and that it was a matter of relief that there had been no loss of life due to the accident.

The statement comes after Pakistan on Friday registered a strong protest and summoned Indian Charge d’Affaires (Cd’A) for the violation of Pakistani air space.

The director general of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) had confirmed on Thursday that on March 9, a high speed flying object was picked up inside the Indian territory. He stated that the object suddenly maneuvered towards Pakistani territory, violated Pakistani airspace, and fell in Mian Channu.

The DG ISPR had added that the flight path endangered civilians in both Pakistan and India, and added, “India must explain what caused this; this reflects poorly on Indian aviation.”

He added that Pakistan strongly protested the “flagrant violation”.
